Fall Fashion 2009

The economy is in the red and so are many designers. Black, red and metallics dominated the runway with some splashes of color, like shocking pink.  Prada’s power suit with skinny belt showed the tightening of our waistline. Common threads seen on many runways were wrapping, draping and banding.  From Diane Von Furstenberg and Balenciaga’s drape to Christian Dior and Marc Jacob’s banding these looks were strong but still feminine.  Standout collections included Rei Kawakubo’s for Comme des Garcon with Trompe l’oeil and protective silhouettes and the most talked about collection, Alexander McQueen’s recycled couture show and his amazing prints.

London Fashion Week

London Fashion Week for Fall 2009 didn’t disappoint. As in the past, London fashion is eclectic and showcases emerging designers. Eccentric fashion and the tried and true, London fashion defines the zeitgeist of our time. Menswear inspired, circus apparel and everything in between. Peter Ingwersen’s designs for Noir/Bllack Noir were asymmetrical and sleek. Vivienne Westwood Red Label showed beautiful tartans and lovely English flannel. Christopher Kane’s collection was airy and pretty with sheer fabrics and unique piping. So much to see and so many styles… bright colors, shiny fabrics, and the ever prevailing black that we’ve seen so much of.

In The Black

Are We in the Black?

With the economy in the red... black is the color for Fall 2009.  Black, grey, creme, white and brown dominated the runways.  Only a few color splashes were seen.  Zac Posen ended his show with red... maybe to signal the worsening economy.  Cocooning and wrapping affects were also spotted from many top brands.  People are hunkering down at home and looking for fashion to have staying power and structure.  History repeats itself with themes of heavy knits, layering and asymmetrical lines.  Not much is to be seen from accessories except clutches, totes, and a few headbands.

Kanye West Entourage

This is from Fffound.com
What a great image of true "street fashion".  The Kanye West Entourage!
Loves it!!!!

Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga

Balenciaga is my favorite brand and I just adore Nicolas Ghesquiere.  He is the "designer's designer" and is one of his generations most influential designers.  Here is a photo from Pre-Fall 2009 and also an photograph I took last year while I was in New York of a window display.

Fashion Week

Paris Couture Week - Spring 2009
During the last week of January the Spring 2009 Couture collections debuted during a weak economic environment.  The shows were elaborate and exciting... just what the fashion machine needed.  John Galliano created a masterful and brilliant collection inspired by both the house founder's "New Look" from 1947 and Dutch Master painters.  As always, Galliano showed his expertise with drape, silhouette and color.  He inspires the world of fashion with his dramatic designs and his wonderful personality!  Thank you John Galliano and keep up the good work!
